Question & Answer

Dental disease is the number one condition seen in small animal veterinary practices, but it can also be one of the most challenging to treat. Educating clients on the disease process and associated therapies is paramount to ensure their pet receives the proper treatment. Veterinary assistants are an integral part of the veterinary education team. Evaluate the following scenarios and strategize how to communicate with clients while effectively acknowledging their concerns.

1. The veterinarian diagnoses stage 1 of periodontal disease in a 2-year-old dog and recommends dental prophylaxis.

2. An owner read about anesthesia-free dentistry and would like her elderly cat with advanced stages of periodontal disease to have this procedure because she is reluctant to have a dental with an anesthetic because of the cat's age.

3. A dog owner went to a specialty pet food store, and a raw diet, along with hard animal bones was recommended by the store staff to prevent periodontal disease.

4. Max, a 9-year-old dog, had a dental cleaning at your clinic. Bob Cullen had signed a consent form and agreed to pre-anesthetic tests for Max. Tami, a certified veterinary technician, cleans Max’s teeth and notices three loose teeth that need to be extracted. Dr. Goodvet pulls the teeth and sends Max home with antibiotics and pain medication. After Tami, the technician, explains the discharge instructions, Bob goes to the front desk to pay. He is outraged when he sees the bill for $404 because he thought the dental cleaning and pre-anesthetic tests would cost $284. Reluctantly, Bob pays with his credit card and storms out of the hospital. He forgets the bag with Max’s antibiotics, pain medication, and discharge instructions.
