A seven-year-old Golden Retriever comes into the clinic with a history of chronic weight loss. The dog weighs 55 pounds and has lost 20 pounds since it was seen seven months ago for its rabies vaccine. You notice that the owner, a young woman, has also lost a lot of weight. She changes the subject when you bring this up. The dog is hospitalized, blood work is all within normal limits, eats ravenously while hospitalized, and gains three pounds. The pet is discharged with feeding instructions, and a recheck exam is scheduled in two weeks. The dog weighs 55 pounds at recheck, but the client says she followed your discharge instructions. How would you discuss a nutritional plan for this dog with the client?

Diet fads (vegetarian diets, raw food, and organic diets) are popular among people and are increasingly popular for pets. Should clients feed their pets as they feed themselves? How would you explain the importance of feline nutrition to a strict vegan client who wants to feed their new kitten a strict vegan diet?
