GP Medical Moments Module

Complete the following questions after you have finished the "Medical Moments" Module. These questions are required to be completed as part of the VRCE program.

Breed Identification

Talk with a teammate about specific breeds. Have them quiz you by describing a specific breed for you to guess. They can also pull up pictures on the internet and have you guess. Cover dogs and cats and common exotics. Write down the ones you did not know here.

Discuss with your teammates the breeds of animals your hospital will see today. Talk about common diseases and characteristics. If you do not know a specific breed, look it up and provide notes here.

Safe Animal Handling

Work with a coworker and practice using a slip lead on friendly patients or stuffed animals. Did you learn any pointers?

What warning signs should you look for before approaching an aggressive animal? What role would you play with aggressive patients in the lobby in your hospital?

Home Collection of a Lab Sample: Coaching the Client

Make a list of objects you can suggest to a client to collect a urine sample in.

Discuss with a technician certain requirements they have for you to take in a urine or stool sample. What sorts of things do you have to relay back to the client?

Discuss with a technician what types of zoonotic diseases can be transferred from animal to person while handling urine or feces. Write those down here. These are some of the reasons for wearing gloves while handling samples.

Proper Prescription Handling

What is your role in prescription handling as a CSR?

Visit your hospital’s pharmacy. Find 5 medications you are unfamiliar with. Work with a technician or doctor to write down the name of the medications and what they are used for below.

Have a staff member print out a prescription label for a medication. It can be a fake label. Identify all of the important components of the label. Write down the parts you identified here.
